Funeral Tomorrow

Tomorrow we are having a small private service to bury Isabelle in a local children’s cemetery.

I’ve always believed that the hardest thing for any parent is burying a child and I can confirm that seems to be the case what I don’t know is if it is harder for a child you never knew in life or not and that’s something I hope I never have to discover. Once is enough for anyone.

Exactly one week after Isabelle died I got a message from my host company saying they where cutting my service. No reason given at all and they took payment up until the day the service was cut. I can only presume ‘unlimited’ bandwidth doesn’t mean unlimited.

So I moved things over to another host but couldn’t understand why I kept seeing the old site but everybody else (I presumed looking at logs) was getting the blank new site. That is until I remembered hacking the hosts file on this windows machine to redirect zx-81.com when I moved from my vps a while ago. One more reason to use Unix over Windows is I can find the hosts file on a strange unix box pretty quickly but it took 10 frustrating minutes and a google search to understand where MS had put things.

It’s been a hard few weeks (and today wasn’t easy either given on the day we where due a 21 week scan we picked a grave marker instead) but things are hopefully getting themselves sorted again.

I’ve started posting on Nerd News again and Get Shirty is getting a new theme design to get my html/css foo pumped so I can start applying for jobs over the next few weeks. The original plan was to swap over house husband/wife roles at the end of the summer anyway so at least that’s on track. If anyone wants a full/part time web dev in the West Mids or has a long term contract and can handle the fact I have Aspergers drop me a line.

Baby Isabelle Rose was stillborn noon 07/08/08, mother is well and is now recovering at home.

There may still be a few pending stories stacked on get-shirty.net and nerd.ws but other than that there will be no blogs for a while.

Self Documenting Code Contest

A contest to write a self documenting program. Should be easy shouldn’t it? but given that good readable code is rarer than a comment that tallies with bad code it should be an interesting challenge.

Sign up for the Beta of Stack Overflow

I managed to get on the Stack Overflow private beta list for being such a nice chap and kissing Joel and Jeff’s arses (well 50% right I’ve never enjoyed the taste of bum) now you can sign up too.

Stack Overflow is a programmers (mostly) question and answer site and even with a couple of hundred active users on the site at the moment I’m amazed at the quality of answers you get to questions.

Currently the site is a little .net centric given that Joel and Jeff are involved those guys got the message quicker than the open source crowd but python, ruby and *nix questions are getting answered really, really quickly as well. If you are a programmer who asks questions or answers them jump aboard the more the merrier. As always I’m sparkes on the site.

I’m involved in the Stack Overflow beta test and if/when life calms down enough for me to do some proper coding I’ll be offering a few insights into how it’s progressing.

So far so good apart from the lack of a sense of humour in some of the participants :)
